A seminar by Prof Daryl Higgins for Catholic Education Melbourne, discussing the prevention of child sexual abuse in organisations.
In August 2017, Professor Daryl Higgins, Director of the ACU Institute of Child Protection Studies, presented a keynote address at a Catholic Education Melbourne workshop: Child Safe Standards: Next steps on the journey.
In his presentation, Child-Safe Organisations: Embedding culture through leadership, Professor Higgins discusses the need to embed child-safe cultures through organisational leadership. He identifies that child sexual abuse occurs at the intersection of motivation (of a potential offender), vulnerability (of a potential victim), and opportunity. Prevention of child sexual abuse requires addressing the preconditions that facilitate abuse at each of these levels. Creating and supporting conditions of safety within families, organisations and communities requires organisational culture change, supported by effective leadership strategies.
