Since 2009, Professor Nicholson has been Associate Vice-Chancellor (NSW/ACT) and Professor of Teacher Education at ACU. An internationally recognised advocate for child protection, in 1991 Professor Nicholson was awarded the New South Wales (NSW) Police Commissioner’s Award and in 2001 she was awarded Trainer of the Year by the Protective Behaviours Consultancy Group of NSW. At ACU, Professor Nicholson was instrumental in the development and delivery of targeted pre-graduate units of study in child protection for students intending to undertake work as teachers, as well as postgraduate programs in child protection.
Professor Nicholson has led numerous research projects with a focus on improved educational outcomes for marginalised people, including child protection. In particular, she was responsible for evaluations of NSW Department of Community Service child protection training, as well as implementation of the Protective Behaviours program. Through this work Professor Nicholson has been pivotal in the development of policies and procedures which have had direct and positive impacts upon the approaches to child abuse and child protection within NSW and across Australia.
Professor Nicholson has also actively promoted and advanced areas of teacher education and preparation. As a member of the Teacher Education Council of NSW, now known as the NSW Council of Deans of Education (NSWTEC), she was elected President in 2008. Professor Nicholson chaired the Initial Teacher Education Committee of the NSW Institute of Teachers and was the Minister’s Higher Education representative on the Quality Teaching Council. In 2012 Professor Nicholson received the Rotary International Award for Vocational Excellence in recognition of her dedication and the pursuit of excellence throughout Professor Nicholson’s career.
