Researchers from the ACU Institute of Child Protection Studies (ICPS) have been awarded a Discovery Grant from the Australian Research Council, to examine the role of ethical practice in improving child safety.
Dr Tim Moore and Professor Morag McArthur join an international team of prominent children’s researchers, led by Professor Anne Graham at Southern Cross University, to undertake this three-year research project.
This important research builds upon the research programs of the recent Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which clearly identified that children’s safety in institutions is an area requiring urgent attention. The project will use an innovative conceptual framework to generate new knowledge, which will help to protect children and support institutions to create safer environments, focusing particularly on those children and young people who are at greater risk of harm. The research will contribute to the development of better targeted and child informed policy and practice for institutions involved with children.
Dr Moore and Professor McArthur bring extensive expertise and experience in the field of child safety and children’s research, and worked closely with the Royal Commission’s research program since 2013, to conduct ground-breaking research into children’s views and experiences of safety in institutions. With colleagues from ICPS, Southern Cross University, University of NSW and Melbourne University, they are currently mid-way through conducting an additional ARC Discovery Project, which is examining ethical research practice with children.
