The ICPS Research to Practice Series links the findings of research undertaken by the ACU Institute of Child Protection Studies, to the development of policy and practice in the area of child, youth and family welfare. Issue 13: Our Safety Counts: Key Findings from the Australian Survey of Kids and Young People – Perceptions of interpersonal safety and characteristics of safe institutions, presents some of the findings from a national online survey of 1480 young Australians aged 10-18.
The Australian Survey of Kids and Young People (the ASK-YP Survey) was the second part of a study conducted by ICPS, commissioned by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which examined children’s experiences and perceptions of safety in institutions. The development of the national online survey was informed by focus groups with 121 children and young people aged 4-18 in the ACT, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Issue 13 should be read in conjunction with Issue 14, which presents further survey findings about children and young people’s views about help-seeking and institutional responses to their safety concerns.
